Thyroid Gland
It is situated in the throat, behind the hyoid bone (Adam's apple). it has two lobes. it secretes 3 hormones namely :-
- tri- iodothyronine (T3)
- Thyroxin (T4)
- Calcitonin
Diseases of thyroid gland :-
Hyperthyroidism : when serum T3 and T4 level is increased & TSH level is remarkably reduced, it results in hyperthyroidism. it affects nearly all organs including GI tracts, cardiovascular, skin, respiratory, neuromuscular, reproductive & produces series of symptoms and signs.
Hypothyroidism : when serum T4 levels are low & TSH levels are high (< 5 m U/L) , serum cholesterol & triglycerides levels are raised, the condition is called Hypothyroidism. like hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism also sffect all vital organs.
Normal values :
serum cholesterol : less than 200 mg %
serum T3 : 0.75 - 2.1 ng/ml
serum T4 : 4.7 - 12.0 ug %
serum TSH : 0.75 - 5.0 uv/ml
