What are Sinuses?
paranasal sinuses are the spaces filled with air in certain bones of the skull & they are directly related with the nasal cavity through their openings called ostia.
There are 6 paranasal sinuses viz -
1) Maxillary sinus
2) frontal sinus
3) anterior ethmoidal sinuses
4) middle ethmoidal sinuses
5) posterior ethmoidal sinuses
6) sphenoidal sinus
Sinusitis : it is the viral/bacterial infection of paranasal sinuses. the most commonly infected sinus is Maxillary sinus.
causative factors :-
- nasal obstruction
- nasal allergy
- forcible cleaning (blowing) of the nose
- swimming - when water enters the nose forcibly
- dental infection especially of upper molars & premolars
- injury to the sinuses
- chill & exposure
- atmospheric pollution
Symptoms of sinusitis : -
1) discomfort in nose and throat
2) pain in the sinuses
3) nasal discharge initially mucoid (mucus); then purulent (with pus)
4) blocking of the nose
5) nasal voice
6) dry cough
7) epistaxis
8) weakness & fever may occur
9) headache associated with cold; more in the morning.
