Bleeding from the nose is called epistaxis. It may be:-
• Anterior/ posterior
• Spontaneous/induced
Causes of epistaxis:-
• Congenital/hereditary
• Trauma a) to the nose, paranasal sinuses or the head.
• Post-operative
• Picking the nose particularly in little's area where there is maximum network of capillaries.
• Inflammation of nose rhinitis or sinusitis, adenoids.
• Tumours of nose, throat, sinuses.
• Foreign body
• Vicarious menstruation: where there is epistaxis instead of menstrual bleeding.
• Hypertension
• Blood cancer, haemophilia
• In high altitude
• Viral fever like influenza, measles, chicken pox
• Typhoid, rheumatic fever
